You Can’t Always Get What You Want

When we bought our new condo I was convinced it was going to be my dream home, complete with an $8,000 custom sectional to fit perfectly in our somewhat awkwardly shaped living room. And then I woke up. You see, while I may in theory be able to purchase such a sofa I am also able to recognize that it may not be the wisest purchase given that we have a nest and no nest egg. It has taken some time but I have come to accept that I am possibly not ready for my dream home. Maybe my dream home is waiting for me in my 40s along with a Birkin bag. Here in my 30s I think I might need to settle for my wicked nice but not too pricey so if a baby pukes on it that’s okay home. And for these reasons I introduce you to my new sofa choice, the Crate & Barrel Sidecar. While it is the perfect size and the perfect price ($2,699) it is not my dream sofa. But if I got everything I wanted by 33 what would there be to look forward too?

it looks great and the price is way better! lots of seating and your clean lines. well done, city!!
For refernce, the super awesome sofa was a custom sized version of this in grey velvet.
Wow, I really loved the sofa you chose (and still do, but…) until I saw your dream sofa. *Swoon*
Both are very excellent choices, did you figure out a good layout for all your furniture?
I do like your new choice, and feel you will be very happy with this sofa. In addition to puke, those little tykes frequently have sticky fingers and they will want to touch everything they walk by. This is a wise decision.
Hi Karen. We did figure out the PERFECT layout and it based on one of the layouts you did for us when we were planning to use the Jonathan Adler non-sectional version of the Lampert. The shorter end of the sectional will be parralel to the kitchen peninsula (leaving plenty of room for stools) with the longer/chaise end going along the wall towards the dining room. That way everyone can have a seat facing the window. I also think that by having just one, albeit large, piece of furniture the room will have a less cluttered look then it would have had with a sofa and two chairs. Thoughts?
Its true, dream sofa is way better than the other sofa. And one day it will be mine. Unfortunately that day won’t be ooming in for another 5 years or so.
I can’t believe you have to settle for a crate and barrell sofa, that is a real shame. but seriously I LOVE this one, I loved the old on too but can’t even remember what it looked like when looking at this one, must be a good sign.
I just read the reviews and everyone loves their sofa. A couple were lucky enough to find it on sale as well. It really is quite beautiful, and the simple lines are so elegant.
I just looked at the super awesome sofa and I guess I never saw a picture of the final choice b/c I love the pin-tucking (or whatever they call it with the buttons) and the grey velvet would be sweet. Definitely for later years though.
City, I think your new layout sounds great! The sectional is a much cleaner choice than the seperate pieces.
And while the Jonathan Adler sofa is amazing, you won’t want something perceived as ”precious’ when life gets in the way. That C&B one is a great choice. I’m assuming you double checked it’s dimensions vs. your space? To make sure there’s room for circulation, etc. Don’t want to be surprised when it lands on your doorstep!
Yep, we taped it out on the floor in blue painters tape. Plenty o’ room to circulate!
I love the dream sofa, but I think the one you chose will actually work better in your place. The charcoal is beautiful and I like the texture of the fabric. Great find!
I ended up putting a slipcover on our mitchell gold sofa to protect it from all the milk/nasal discharge/drool. What end tables are you getting? Ours are beat up. Both of my monsters like to take hard objects and bang them on my beautiful tables…
Nasal discharge, huh? Gross!
