CityMouse’s Coat Closet- Before

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  Our sincere apologies for the sporadic (or less than sporadic) posts.  CountryMouse has been consumed with getting her home ready to go on the market in preparation ffor the move to NYC and I have been consumed by tax season (I know, way less exciting).  I’ve also been spending lots of time getting my home into shape.  It was pretty neglected when we moved in because all of our free time was devoted to wedding planning.  Anyway, here’s my most recent project.  We have a very small kitchen.  Its basically the size of a small suburban walk-in closet.  The problem is that we came from a home with a very large kitchen and thus have tons o’ kitchen crap with nowhere to put it.  So we have spent the last week or so converting the coat closet into a hybrid coat closet/pantry.  Continue reading »

You Can’t Always Get What You Want

Crate and Barrel Sidecar Sectional

When we bought our new condo I was convinced it was going to be my dream home, complete with an $8,000 custom sectional to fit perfectly in our somewhat awkwardly shaped living room.  And then I woke up.  You see, while I may in theory be able to purchase such a sofa I am also able to recognize that it may not be the wisest purchase given that we have a nest and no nest egg.   It has taken some time but I have come to accept that I am possibly not ready for my dream home.  Maybe my dream home is waiting for me in my 40s along with a Birkin bag.  Here in my 30s I think I might need to settle for my wicked nice but not too pricey so if a baby pukes on it that’s okay home.  And for these reasons I introduce you to my new sofa choice, the Crate & Barrel Sidecar.  While it is the perfect size and the perfect price ($2,699) it is not my dream sofa.  But if I got everything I wanted by 33 what would there be to look forward too?

Flor Carpet Tiles

I have always thought that Flor carpet squares were brilliant.  I hate being that hostess who rolls up her fancy rug before having a large group over.  And while it won’t happen anytime soon I do indeed plan to reproduce one day and from what I hear babies are not exactly the tidiest little buggers, so being able to switch out a dirty carpet square as opposed to buying an entirely new rug is certainly as appealing idea.  If only the majority of their choices weren’t so institutional looking.  Enter Martha.  Her new line of Flor carpet squares are amazing!  I’m particularly in love with this lattice pattern.  Btw, I found these over at FancyPants and she has a 15% off coupon code good thru 2/26.

You Light Up My Life

ET2 Inca Seven Light Flush Mount

So, I’m sure you’ve heard but just in case you’re new here I have a new home and absolutely nothing in it.  Actually I have a home office but that’s about it.  Here’s the thing about new costruction condos.  Its VERY dark.  By code developers (at least here in Boston) are only required to give you light in kitchens, bathrooms and hallways.  The good news is that this level of darkness makes it very difficult for people to tell we don’t have furniture.  The bad news is that its very difficult to get around late at night and early in the morning.  Since our living room has low ceilings we were looking for a flush mount light that says living room instead of kitchen and we were loking to find this light on the cheap.  I also wanted something girly and a little glam and Mr.CityMous wanted something more manly.  If you’ve done any light shopping recently you know this is a fairly tall order.  So, after many a late night ombing the web for the perfect light we have decided on the ET2 Inca Seven Bulb Flsh Mount Light.  Its only $268.20 and it comes with free 3 day shipping.  I wonder if being able to see my fingers type will help with my typos.  Doubtful.

Office Update

CityMouse’s Home Office

Thanks to everyone for their input on adding artwork to our office.  Here’s a look at the new and improved space.  I think the artwork makes the space feel cozier and more finished.  We still need a little more color on the bookcases but the foo dogs are on their way and should really help.

Pearl River Foo Dogs

This has been the weekend of the bookcase at my house.  Poor Mr. CityMouse is sick but I won’t let him rest until at least 2 of our 3 new bookcases are fully functional.  Operation bookcase has been moving along nicely with one exception.  We don’t own any bookends.  Right now all I have to stop my books from tumbling over is the power of my evil eye and that’s just not that powerful.  Feel free to leave gratuitous references to my low mitachlorian count in the comments section.  Mr. CityMouse suggested that we invest in some plain black metal bookends from Office Max.  Ugh.  What about these gorgeous glossy turquoise foo dogs from Pearl River instead.  The pair is just $25.  Slightly more expensive than the Office Max option but endlessly better looking.

Finally!

CityMouse’s New Home Office

CityMouse here.  Coming to you live from my new home office!  It may not seem like much toyou guys but its about a bazillion times better than what we had before.  We also have paintings to hang over our desks.  Just trying to figure out if that would be too busy.  Please let me know your thoughts.

Guess What…

January 10th, 2010

You’ll never guess!  Remember back on 1/1 when I blogged about the Tesso Bookcases from CB2?  They’re $299 each plus shipping and handling.  Not to bad, eh?  Well today I bought two of them from someone on Craig’s List for  $250 TOTAL.  $125 each.  Can you believe it???  In one weekend we’ve gone from no bookcases to 3 bookcases.  Making this one of my best weekends ever.  Craig, I don’t know who you are but thans for the list!

West Elm Parsons BookcaseWest Elm Mini Parsons Desk

When we moved into our new condo we had really grand plans for our study.  We were planning to have a wall unit built that house two desk and a really awesome electric sliding murphy bed and a flat screen.  The problem?  Those things all cost money and we don’t have any.  So for the last 6 months we’ve had a really ghetto setup involving a computer, mahjong table, folding tray table and a huge wingback chair.  Please note that desk was nowhere on that list and that computer was not plural.  Something has to be done and I’ve decided that it has to be done for uner $1,000.  I had picked out two of the mini parsons desks and the coordinating parsons shelves from West Elm and have been patiently awaiting the arival of a coupon code which came today!!!!  15% off all purchases for the next 5 days.

Thanks, Lord

West Elm Pivot Storage Bed

I have previously ranted about my love of hydraulic storage beds and my inability to comprehend their exhorbitant prices.  I mean, if I had that much money to spend then wouldn’t I be able to afford bookshelves and a custom closet and then not actually be in need of secret under bed storage?  It turns out God was listening and has answered my prayers.  Check out this very affordable version in the new West Elm Spring Collection. Even better, that headboard isn’t attached.  The bed is awesome but that headboard is not what I am looking for.  I’m thinking more of a long and low upholstered headboard and I’m pretty sure we can DIY what I’m looking for.  The West Elm pivot storage bed is $999 for a queen.  That’s compared to $7,000 for the higher end version of the same thing.  In your face, Flou!
